Buying a wheelchair in Singapore involves more than picking a price point. The wrong type — too wide for HDB doorways, too heavy for the caregiver, or without the right features for the user's condition — can make daily life harder, not easier. This guide covers the main wheelchair types, Singapore prices, subsidy options, and what to check before you buy.

If a caregiver always pushes, a transit chair is lighter and cheaper. If the user has arm strength and wants independence, choose a self-propelled model. If neither is possible, consider a power wheelchair.
For indoor home use, a narrower transit chair is easier to manoeuvre in HDB corridors and bathrooms. For regular outings, prioritise a model that folds easily to fit in a car boot or MRT accessibility spaces.
Standard HDB interior doorways are approximately 700–750mm wide. Most wheelchairs are 600–650mm wide — measure your narrowest doorway before purchasing, especially bathroom and bedroom doors.
Most standard wheelchairs support up to 100–120kg. Check the weight rating. Seat width, seat depth, and footrest height should all be fitted to the user — an OT or medical supplier can assist with this.
For seniors who spend extended time in a wheelchair, a pressure-relief cushion is essential to prevent pressure sores. These are available separately and may also be SMF-eligible. Ask your OT.
An occupational therapist can assess the right wheelchair type, size, and accessories for your loved one's specific condition. This is also required for AIC SMF subsidy applications.
All manual and power wheelchairs are eligible for the AIC Seniors' Mobility and Enabling Fund (SMF) for Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 60 and above. The subsidy covers up to 90% of the approved cost, depending on your assessed household income.
For power wheelchairs, AIC may have an approved list of models — check with AIC or your OT before committing to a specific model. The process is the same: OT assessment → AIC approval → purchase from approved vendor → pay co-payment only.
